Blaine McCurdy joined Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State’s Rising Scholars program in sixth grade after learning about the program and its opportunities for a college education in Columbiana County where he lives. Blaine, who is a first-generation college student, is now in his junior year at Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State University at Salem studying psychology. The Rising Scholars Program, one on each Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State campus, combines mentoring with assistance from local communities and businesses to provide support for young adults beginning in seventh grade. Sara Bayramzadeh, Ph.D., The Elliot Professor in Healthcare Design in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design was featured in Healthcare Design magazine for her leadership in the healthcare design program. Bayramzadeh’s approach to the curriculum requires students to find a practice-based mentor who specializes in their area of interest. Students meet with their mentors throughout the semester to learn from their real-world expertise and expand their professional networks. Day of Giving Student Choice Award

This year, the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State University Foundation will give $1,000 to one of the university’s key student support funds in celebration of Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State’s 113th birthday. From April 24-May 19, students will have the chance to vote for one of four funds, including the CARES Center Fund, the Flashes Fighting Hunger Support Fund, the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State Emergency Grant Fund and the Last Dollar Book Scholarship. Introduction to Engineering Hovercrafts

On May 3rd, students in Dr. Kelsen LaBerge’s Introduction to Engineering course demonstrated their Hovercraft projects. This project serves as a class capstone, where the 79  students in the course were divided into 13 teams that must successfully design, build, and fly a hovercraft that adheres to a specified budget.  Students work with their teams to come up with a preliminary design before giving a presentation of their work.
