AMLCI Fellowships

AMLCI offers scholarships to support outstanding graduate students conducting research related to liquid crystals.

Available Fellowships

Glenn H. Brown Fellowship
$1,500 travel award
For outstanding graduate students engaged in research on biological or biology-related topics of liquid crystals.

Alfred Saupe Fellowship
$1,500 travel award
For outstanding graduate students working on the physics or materials science of liquid crystals.

James Fergason Fellowship
$1,500 travel award
For outstanding graduate students conducting applied research using liquid crystals.

TED Talk Requirement

Award recipients will be required to give a 10-minute TED Talk at Materials Day 2026 on Friday, April 10, 2026.

For guidance on preparing a TED-style presentation, visit:

The talk should be based on your research, with special emphasis on its broader impact and scope. In particular, applicants should consider questions such as:
How will the world be better because of this research, and who in society will benefit from it?

  • A statement describing which conference you plan to attend using this award and why that meeting is important for your career development

  • A career/research statement

Eligibility and Deadline

Please submit your nomination by March 1, 2026. (Deadline is now closed).

Only current students are eligible and must meet the fellowship restrictions specified by the donors.
