Updated: Jan. 25 at 7:20 p.m.

All Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State University campuses will be closed Monday, Jan. 26, due to expected snow. The Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative will notify their students and employees with separate guidance.

CLASSES

For online classes: All classes offered online will continue as usual.

For in-person classes: In-person classes will not meet in person. However, instructors teaching in person have the option to conduct a synchronous online session and/or assign appropriate asynchronous work. Before the class is scheduled to begin, instructors will alert students by email or Canvas about the expectations for their participation during the closure.

  • After checking their email and Canvas, students who need additional guidance should contact their instructor.
  • Students in special classes, such as clinical rotations, should check with their instructor or placement supervisor on the appropriate procedures for an early morning delay or cancellation.

EMPLOYEES

All essential personnel are to report to work.

Nonessential staff are not required to report to campus or work remotely during a campus closure, regardless of telecommuting arrangement. However, staff must check with their supervisors to determine their team’s work plan, as some operations, deadlines and urgent items may require that nonessential staff still work during a closure. These instances are to be handled on a case-by-case basis between supervisor and employee.

Complete inclement weather details for employees are available online, including FAQs about time reporting.

COLLEGE OF PODIATRIC MEDICINE

Due to extreme weather conditions in the greater Cleveland area, Dr. Boike has authorized the early closure of the College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) campus at 3 p.m. on Jan. 25. The Independence campus building will be closed and inaccessible.

Additionally, CPM and all Cleveland Foot & Ankle Clinic locations will be closed on Monday, Jan. 26.

CPM plans to resume regular campus operations on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Students on Local External Rotations:  Please confirm attendance requirements for Monday, Jan. 26 directly with your program director or coordinator.  The CPM closure tomorrow does not excuse student attendance requirements for external rotations.

The governor and Cuyahoga County officials have enacted emergency restrictions for travel over the next 36 hours. Please use extreme caution if there is a need to travel. Lastly, many local businesses have closed or will close early today due to the weather.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

For your safety, please stay indoors when possible. When traveling outdoors is necessary, exercise extreme caution to avoid frostbite, hypothermia or other cold weather health issues, which can occur quickly. Please adhere to the guidance provided by the National Weather Service.

UPDATES AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Visit the campus advisory webpage for the latest updates. Information about the operations of Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Campus facilities, such as the dining locations, Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Student Center and University Library, and safety considerations can also be found on the campus advisory webpage

Advisory Page Update Process

If you have recently received a Flash ALERTS text message or an email about a current campus advisory, please allow 10-15 minutes for this webpage to reflect the related advisory information and additional details. The text alert is sent first, followed by an email and then the post to this webpage.

Inclement Weather Procedures

While the safety of our people is our priority, in general, the university does not close or cancel classes because of cold weather, winter ice and/or snow. However, on rare occasions, weather conditions may delay or cancel classes, or close campus. (Note: Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State’s campuses will all follow the general guidelines below, but each campus makes its own decisions based on weather conditions.)

When inclement weather threatens or extreme cold prevails, we expect to announce our actions by 5:30 a.m. for morning and all-day cancellations, 10 a.m. for afternoon classes and 3 p.m. for evening classes. In general, our decision will be guided by the condition of major roadways, campus roadways and sidewalks, and by our ability to plow our parking lots. For extreme cold, we typically will delay or cancel when the wind chill reaches (or is predicted to reach) -15 degrees Fahrenheit for an extended period

Additional Points
  • We understand that on bad weather days some areas on campus may require additional attention. Please help identify those areas on the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Campus by calling 330-672-2345 or the main office for Regional Campuses.
  • When classes are canceled, university services remain open. This means that staff members are expected to report to work as usual.
  • Employees and commuting students should always use sound personal judgments regarding the safety of their travel when deciding whether or not to report to work or classes. Students must arrange to make up missed work promptly; university leave policy governs the reporting and recording of work absences.
  • When driving in the snow, please warm up your car before driving, allow extra travel time to get to your destination and go slow.
  • Students in special classes, such as clinical rotations, should check with their instructor or placement supervisor on the appropriate procedures for an early morning delay or cancellation.
  • A closing order from the governor’s office applies to state office buildings and other state employees in the field. Colleges and universities do not fall into this category.
  • If you are a College of Podiatric Medicine student and/or support the Cleveland Foot & Ankle Clinic, in many instances, the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Campus and Twinsburg Academic Center closures do not apply to the College of Podiatric Medicine. Always check your @kent.edu email account to verify the status of the College of Podiatric Medicine location.
