Celebrating Leadership: Honoring Our Outgoing Leaders and Welcoming the Next Generation

Each spring, we celebrate not only the accomplishments of our graduating students, but also the passing of the torch—the moment when one generation of leaders makes way for the next. This year’s Student Media leadership team has been exceptional, guiding our media outlets through transformation, innovation and a deepened connection to our campus and community. Their legacy is already clear, and their influence will continue to shape our work for years to come.

Audio and Entertainment

As the first-ever director of the newly formed Audio and Entertainment division, Anthony Furiga helped build a foundation for creativity, collaboration, and cross-platform storytelling. From live shows and a televised fundraising event to launching a student film awards program, Anthony empowered Black Squirrel Radio and Black Squirrel Entertainment to thrive together. After four years in Student Media, Anthony graduates and hands the reins to Cohlman Arthur, former BSE Executive Producer, whose experience promises to push the boundaries even further.

Production and Film Distribution

Sophia Sainato, another first in her role, led the Production and Film Distribution unit with excellence, running the Franklin Hall studio, developing student production teams and launching KSTV on Roku. Sophia leaves behind a powerful legacy of access and visibility. Devin Gallagher, who served alongside her last year, will now lead the way with a deep understanding of production and the potential for expansion.

Audience and Engagement

What began as a one-person effort is now a 15-member strong operation thanks to Kyla Carter, who started the Audience team from scratch. Under her guidance, the team built an infrastructure that brought The Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Stater to new readers and laid the foundation for the Audience team to start amplifying the reach of all our media outlets. Kyla is succeeded by Kayliyah Simmons, a natural fit who has worked as both Social Media Producer for Audience and Marketing and Promotions Specialist for Advertising.

News

Few students have made the kind of impact Alton Northup has. As our first News Director after combining The Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Stater and Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Stater TV, Alton led the newsroom to one of its proudest accomplishments: First Place in News Coverage from the Ohio News Media Association. His team’s reporting broke stories that made their way to local and national news. Anthony Leonardi, a talented journalist and former Sports Content Manager, will step into the role with great momentum.

Fusion Magazine

Alex Miller leaves behind a stunning legacy at Fusion, two thoughtful, visually rich issues and a powerful step forward in expanding Fusion’s multimedia presence. Under Alex, the team launched a podcast, refined their social strategy, and leaned into storytelling that resonates. Ivory Herman, former Managing Editor, now takes the lead, ready to carry Fusion’s vision forward with heart and clarity.

A Magazine

A Mag found its voice under the guidance of Kayla Friedman, who led the team with grace, consistency, and a strong editorial vision. From bold print issues to a polished online and podcast presence, Kayla helped redefine what fashion and culture coverage can look like. She is succeeded by Hannah Planey, a sharp editor who served as Assistant Editor and brings both editorial depth and creative spark.

The Burr Magazine

Under Genna Sobiech, The Burr underwent a rebrand and a renewal of purpose, focusing on storytelling that speaks to the everyday lives and challenges of Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State students. Her leadership helped usher in a new era of voice and relatability. Adriana Gasiewski, though new to The Burr, brings experience from The Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Stater and A Mag, and a deep passion for connecting with readers.

Luna Negra

Angelena Acierno led the Luna Negra team in publishing a stunning 64-page issue that captured the diversity of student creativity across disciplines. Her leadership brought a sense of cohesion and care to every page. Jamie Zickefoose, who supported Luna Negra last semester, now takes the reins to continue elevating this one-of-a-kind publication.

Advertising

Alexandre Bosco Andrade is the only leader not graduating and therefore returning this next year. His leadership has transformed the Student Media sales team from launching a rebrand to developing a new rate card and driving revenue strategy, Alex has laid a strong foundation for a successful year ahead. His work has already begun to reshape the business side of our media outlets with integrity and purpose.

As we say goodbye to a group of exceptional student leaders, we welcome a new team full of promise, passion, and perspective. The future of Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State Student Media is bright, and we can’t wait to see what comes next.
