High School Students Get Hands-On with Chemistry at Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State

Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Roosevelt students learn about chemistry careers and research opportunities

On January 8, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry welcomed 80 chemistry students from Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Roosevelt High School for a morning of hands-on science and exploration. During the visit, students were introduced to the department and learned about career pathways in chemistry, as well as opportunities for undergraduate research at Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ State.

The program included live chemistry demonstrations led by the chemistry stockroom, featuring crowd-pleasing reactions such as lighting methane bubbles and freezing fruit with liquid nitrogen. Students then toured the department's laboratories and teaching facilities before taking part in small-group experiments. In one laboratory, participants extracted DNA from strawberries, giving them a chance to work directly with biochemistry techniques.

The department hopes this visit sparked curiosity and provided a positive outlook into scientific research and education. We thank our guests for spending the morning with us and look forward to future collaborations.
